The Inspiration behind Our Name

Sir William Pulteney*, the Earl of Bath had a problem. Across the River Avon from Bath lay the entirely rural 600 acre estate of Bathwick. Although its potential for development was obvious, the only direct route from Bath to Bathwick was by ferry. So he commissioned the building of the Pulteney Bridge (pictured) to OPEN up New Markets and to fully realize the Opportunity before him. Interestingly it is one of only three bridges lined with shops and commerce in the world.

One writer stated: "It consists of three lofty arches, and is surmounted on each side by handsome houses, so that no indication of a bridge is perceived by the person who passes over it."
